Saxophone Lessons

Do I need my own Saxophone?

Yes. In order to learn the saxophone, you will need an instrument to practise on regularly and bring to lessons. You can hire or buy a new or secondhand instrument, and Ben can help you select a suitable saxophone.

What type of saxophone should I start to learn on?

I think it's a good idea to learn the saxophone that you like the sound of the most as you will feel more enthusiasm for your own sound.

Many people start with the alto saxophone as there are many second hand and hire saxes available, and it is a manageable size.

Soprano saxophone can be difficult for beginners, as the intonation (playing in tune) is more challenging than Alto or Tenor.

What age should I start to learn the saxophone?

As the saxophone is a resonably large and heavy instrument, a child needs to be of a certain size to begin to learn. Generally I would say children 11-12 years of age and above can start to learn the sax.

And of course, it's never too late to learn. I have students who have started in their 20's and make excellent progress or who are picking up the saxophone again after a long break.

Do I need to learn clarinet or any other instrument first?

No, you don't need to learn any instrument before you learn the saxophone.

Any previous experience you have with any musical instrument will help you learn the saxophone though.

Some instruments whose skills translate well are Recorder, Flute, Clarinet and Piano. Recorder and Piano are particularly good for children too young to begin playing the saxophone.
